Charcoal print on Hahnemühle 200g Acid-free matte photo paper
I’ve always wanted to draw BIG. Not only does it make it easier to get the details right, but it's so visually impressive. Disco balls are such an iconic symbol of music, dancing and fun. It was actually a tattoo that I saw on instragram that inspired me to draw it. The image is on my instagram highlights. I set about trying to find a disco ball and, whilst trying to navigate Amazon.mx on the roof terrace of my Mexico City hostel, I looked up from my screen and lo and behold, there one was! Pretty dusty and damaged but I think that made it perfect. The cracks and the dislodged mirrors made the reference, and therefore the drawing, unique and distinct. A disco ball that’s been around the block, that’s partied HARD. I wanted it to be huge, but not so huge that they wouldn’t allow it on a plane (the typical carry-on limit for special items is 120cm in length). It took far longer than expected, but I love how it turned out. I’m dreaming of exhibiting it behind a DJ deck in a vibey bar or club… tbc.
